OMG I’m only 35% White!

Well at least according to the website Stuff White People Like!

The whole list is pretty hysterical, one of my many fave quotes, from #93 Music Piracy (which I do not like) but this part kills me because it’s so true in my circles:

Because of the availability of music online, a very strict social hierarchy has been created within white culture whereby someone with a large MP3 collection is considered “normal,” a large CD collection is considered to be “better,” and a person with a large vinyl collection is recognized as “elite.”

These elite white people abhor the fact that music piracy has made their B-sides, live performances, and bootlegs available to the masses. Their entire life’s work has been stripped of its rarity in terms of both object and sound on the record. The best thing you can say to them is: “vinyl still sounds better.”

However, it is recommended that you do not let this conversation drag much longer. If you let them continue talking to you they are likely to spend hours talking to you about bands you’ve never heard of and providing you with a weekly mix CD of rarities that you do not want.

There are 126 things on the master list but these are the ones I could honestly say I had to admit to!

#126 Vespa Scooters - they’re so cool looking!
#123 Mad Men – also so cool looking, and vintage
#119 Sea Salt - well, I love all salt
#116 Black Music that Black People Don’t Listen to Anymore - jazz, Stevie Wonder, but no Blues
#114 America – I do get all teary eyed at parades and patriotic songs
#113 Halloween - I like to dress up, but am afraid of trick or treaters
#111 Pea Coats – I had one, guilty!
#109 The Onion - of course
#106 Facebook - a necessary evil
#104 Girls with Bangs - I’ve got ‘em!
#103 Sweaters - I’ve got so many cardigans, I’m always cold
#99 Grammar – there, their they’re!
#97 Scarves – again, see the always cold remark, but only in winter
#94 Free Healthcare – you have to read the entry for this one, it’s hysterical
#92 Book Deals - I won’t be afraid to admit I’d love my own book deal
#88 Having Gay Friends - I’ve got ‘em!
#84 T-Shirts - of course
#83 Bad Memories of High School - well who doesn’t have ‘em?
#82 Hating Corporations – stick it to the man
#79 Modern Furniture - well not all but some
#77 Musical Comedy - Allan Sherman, Tom Lehrer, yep.
#74 Oscar Parties – only the one at the Colonial Theatre
#71 Being the only white person around - guilty at restaurants
#67 Standing Still at Concerts – force of habit, but you have to read the entry on this one
#64 Recycling – I’ve even got my own recycling bin under my desk
#53 Dogs – better than cats and kids, imho
#51 Living by the Water – ocean preferrably
#50 Irony – ironing?
#49 Vintage – guilty of telling folks I picked it up for a steal at a thrift store
#47 Arts Degrees – So useful! I have one.
#44 Public Radio – I listen all the time, am I being brainwashed?
#42 Sushi - Cliff’s fave, I’ve become a fan
#41 Indie Music – can I help it if the music  I like never gets popular?
#39 Netflix – who doesn’t like Netflix?
#37 Renovations – wish we could have some done to the Hacienda
#36 Breakfast Places – I love all food places, breakfast is fine by me
#34 Architecture – buildings are cool!
#28 Not having a TV – guilty
#26 Manhattan (now Brooklyn too!) – we had our first date in NYC other than that I’d pretend I didn’t like the city
#23 Microbreweries - indie beer
#22 Having Two Last Names - well Cliff has one last name and I have another, so there you go
#13 Tea – not a coffee drinker so what’s a gal to do?
#8 Barack Obama – someone’s got to help the country!
#5 Farmer’s Markets – yep, tho I can never buy as much as I want to
#3 Film Festivals – sure!

and you?

Life to me

life to you

This is the message I received after eating my fave, chicken with hot dry peppers at Han Dynasty. As you can see from the peppers it’s dashing and bold, I guess just like yours truly!

May you dream of healing angels

Our neighbor Alex knocked on the back door a few days ago to let us know that Mary had been in the hospital since Sunday and would probably not make it through the evening. We had not seen much of her in the last many months because of the cold, and her increasingly reclusive ways, but had no idea she was at this stage. We stopped in to visit her and wish her well, and hope that she finds peace soon. I want to remember her as the kind neighbor who would pick us berries or apples and send them over, or chat with me as I was raking the lawn, telling me stories of falling off the sled when she was a kid, or the history that she and Alex had in town.

Word of the day-Festoon

The little used word festoon ( to adorn with) has been in my head lately since I saw it used in the Better Homes & Gardens Christmas Ideas issue, 1956. Now when I try to look for it I can’t locate it but you know I would not, could not make that up.

Instead I bring you this:

Other words that have caught my ear today:

Sobriquet (thanks Little Edie!)

Denizen (thanks Dyslexic Heart!)
