new modbetty blog- Retro Roadmap
In my ever growing quest to document and share the good vintage and retro places that are still around, I’ve created a new blog to organize them and share with the world.
Not knowing at the beginning which domain I liked better, I bought 2 but they’re both directed to the same blog at the moment:
I’ve only got a few posts up but am going to be adding information as often as possible- I’m also looking for anyone who wants to help out with content, writing etc- let me hear your ideas and suggestions!
Note Well Your Dawns and Sunsets
In researching a thrift find from last night ($1.97 silver cocktail jigger, has gone for $31 on eBay, not bad!) I came across the quote below from Crosby Gaige, author of 1941′s Cocktail Guide and Ladies’ Companion. I think it’s a keeper. I also noticed that the graphic from the front of his book, as seen in the photo on the Crosby Gaige homepage , is also the one I took a photo of at PDT in NYC in January- small world!
NOTE WELL YOUR DAWNS AND YOUR SUNSETS;
REMEMBER THE COLOR AND TINTS OF LIFE AS YOU LEAD IT;
DON’T FORGET THE SMELL OF SMOKE,
WHETHER FROM A FIRE IN THE OPEN
OR FROM ONE THAT CRACKLES ON THE HEARTH;
REMEMBER
HOW GOOD FOOD CAN BE WHEN YOU ARE HUNGRY;
HOW SOFT AND COMFORTABLE A BED WHEN YOU ARE TIRED,
AND HOW EXCITING WHEN YOU HAVE PLEASANT COMPANY;
NEVER FORGET A FRIEND NOR THE CLASP OF HIS HAND;
GIVE ALWAYS AS MUCH AS YOU RECEIVE AND PERHAPS AN EXTRA PORTION;
REMEMBER THAT THE TRUEST PHILOSOPHY LIES IN AN UNDERSTANDING AND ACCEPTANCE OF OUGHT AND MUST.
DON’T LET THE SMALL THREADS OF THE DAY’S WORK SLIP AS THEY RUN THROUGH YOUR FINGERS, FOR FINALLY,
IF YOU HAVE KEPT THEM REASONABLY INTACT AND UNTANGLED THEY MAKE THE WARP AND WOOF OF THE TAPESTRY OF LIVING.
H-O-ST-E-SS, that’s the way we spell HOSTESS!
Recovering from a wonderful weekend of prepping for and participating in our annual Holiday Open Hacienda. We topped the charts at almost 40 folks this year, and had we a few dozen more kickin’ chickens, they might all still be here.
Doing the post party roundup tonight and adding a number of things to Snappy Apps , which is again on my list of things to complete. Will let you know when that h’app’ens!

And she’s off- LUPEC, Boston and Beyond!
Taking a well needed whole entire day off from work tomorrow (hedonistic, ain’t it) to head to where it’s even colder- oh boy!
Highlights include the LUPEC Boston USO show, being one step closer to bringing Auntie Mame home (more on that when she arrives) potential for tiki bowling, Kowloon, the Parent Trap or Bye Bye Birdie, and not enough time to do it all.
As they say in Canada, Italy and the South End, Cin-Cin!
looking fwd2 Apotiki this Saturday
Just got word of this, and already put it in the zebra striped social calendar!
Sassy Sidecar
Went to Sassafras in Old City, the only cool place in the area IMHO, and had a lovely sidecar. Lovely I tellya!
LUPEC- love it!
a few years ago I was gathering up information for a birthday trip to Pittsburgh. Yes, I am the type of gal that goes to Pittsburgh for her birthday. A pal of mine had written a lengthy article about the Burgh for his magazine, so I had a list to start with and knew I wanted to check out some of the places.
One of the places was the Suburban Room. With the name Suburban and that wonderful green vitrolite exterior, how could I not want to check out the Suburban Room. That is SO up my alley!
Bad news -when we arrived in town, the Suburban Room was closed. And even worse, the original incarnation had closed for good ( the old owner had passed away) and it was being reopened into a place that served wings and showed sports. If this is progress yo u can have it.
Good news- in trolling the interweb for info about this place I discovered LUPEC- Ladies United to Preserve Endangered Cocktails, and knew instantly I had found some kindred spirits. They had visited the Suburban Room a few years prior to my visit, and I can’t thank them enough for snapping photos of the wonderful place- and of course for starting a kick ass organization like LUPEC!
Since then LUPEC has blossomed like gin across the country- Boston has an active chapter, and I know NYC, Philly, Denver and other hotspots have joined the cause. I tried to start a chapter, but with the busy lives of the gals I know, we decided we could not do the name justice, and became instead the Queens of Prussia.
So I raise my cocktail glass to LUPEC, and toast the memory of the Suburban Room!
Batter made with Butter makes it Better!
Just in time for cold weather drinking and holiday parties. Thanks Harv!
